Computer and network security are important and complex topics for any library that uses computers in any capacity -- which is pretty much every library. The sub-topic navigation to your left will get you into the specific areas of network, virus, and workstation protection. And don't forget to check out security strategy, since a little planning can save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
If you have something to share with your colleagues, we'd highly encourage you to contribute an article of your own. Through the contributions and involvement of our members, WebJunction exists as a living conversation on topics of interest to people who work with and care about libraries.

Locking Down Computers with the Shared Computer Toolkit
Microsoft recently released a free, downloadable security tool developed with the needs of librarians and schoolteachers in mind. The purpose of the Shared Computer Toolkit (SCT) is to make public access computers more reliable and easier to maintain by preventing unauthorized changes to the hard disk, and limiting the privileges of untrusted users (e.g. library patrons). For those familiar with the computers granted by the Gates Foundation, the SCT is the successor to the security tool on those workstations, which was known as the Public Access Security Tool (PAC Tool).
