The Library Responses to Economic Tough Times survey collected data about state libraries' perceptions of increased patron demands on libraries and responses to those needs from state libraries and local public libraries.

The attached documents capture the responses given by state library representatives. Names and identifying information have been removed so that the responses are largely anonymous. Find individual state responses in the Compass Snapshots section.

  • Attachment #1: The PDF displays statistical data only, with percentages for response choices.
  • Attachment #2: The spreadsheet displays bar charts of the statistical data plus all of the open-ended responses.

Results of the survey provide a collective snapshot of the strength of library responses to tough times. However, the survey was conducted in a brief window of time with no expectation that any state library would conduct an internal survey or thorough research of public library services and needs. Please note that respondents were asked to answer survey questions “to the best of their knowledge.”
